Belgian Billionaire Dreams of Libertarian Island Utopia in the Caribbean

Mohit Singh

Olivier Janssens isn’t your typical billionaire. He’s Belgian, he’s made his fortune in crypto, and now he’s dreaming big, really big. He wants to build an entire libertarian community in the Caribbean, complete with its own legal system.

According to the Financial Times, Janssens, who holds Belgian and Nevisian citizenship, has secured citizenship in Saint Kitts and Nevis through the island’s investment program. Through his company, South Nevis, he’s buying land on Nevis for a project called Destiny.

We’re not talking a few villas on a hill. This is a multi-billion-dollar development along the south coast of Nevis, a tiny island of just 93 square kilometers and about 13,200 residents.

And If it happens, it’ll be the first major development under a law passed last summer that allows large projects to operate their own dispute resolution mechanisms.

What Destiny could look like

The plans are ambitious. Janssens envisions villas, hospitals, green spaces, and swimming pools, all designed by the US architecture powerhouse Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the same team behind the Burj Khalifa.

He’s also promised to pump $50 million into local infrastructure, sweetening the deal for the government.

But here’s the kicker: Janssens wants his own legal system inside Destiny. That means residents could follow rules separate from Nevisian courts, a bold move that has raised eyebrows locally.

“Host nation” vibes

In a video presentation to residents last November, Janssens didn’t hold back. He called Nevis courts inefficient and said copying that system wouldn’t attract the kind of people he wants. He also made it clear he doesn’t trust politicians, referring to Nevis as merely the “host nation” for his libertarian enclave.

The real estate connection is interesting too. The agent helping him buy land? Sharon Brantley, the wife of Nevis’s prime minister, Mark Brantley. That could make for some interesting political dynamics.

Why it matters

This isn’t just another luxury development. It’s a crypto billionaire trying to create a mini-state, with his own rules, governance, and way of life. If Destiny succeeds, it could set a precedent for other wealthy individuals looking to build private, self-governing communities.

It’s bold. It’s ambitious. And whether locals embrace it or push back could define the future of Nevis as a hub for crypto, wealth, and libertarian experiments.
